Why Bird Droppings Ruin Your Car’s Paint

bird-1387924_640It has been known for many years that bird droppings are not something we want to see on our car’s paintwork due to the damage they can cause. However, do you know the real reason that bird droppings ruin paintwork?

Many people believe that it is the acid in the bird lime that causes the deterioration of lacquer, I too thought this, however it has come to light that it is in actual fact the cooling of the paint lacquer that contracts and hardens around the deposits, causing damage.

When paint lacquer warms in the sunlight (or any source of heat), it softens and expands. When this happens, the heat dries and hardens the bird droppings onto the paintwork. Then as the lacquer cools again, it contracts, hardens and moulds itself around the texture of the bird droppings.

But do not fear as long as you wash the droppings off as soon as you notice them, you can avoid or at least reduce the risk of a lasting mark or dullness.

To reduce the risk of this happening altogether, you can park your car underneath manmade structures such as garages and carports. Garages can be quite costly and depending on your location and size required, they may require planning permission. Carports however, are much more cost effective than garages and we have never had a domestic customer that has been required to apply for planning permission.
